Community Project Workshop has been commissioned by DAB to conduct a research on possible ways to revitalize three old markets in New Territories, namely – Luen Wo Hui, Shek Wu Hui and Tai Po Market. The team collected and summarized opinions from the neighbourhood about how to re-plan the three markets and improve the districts’ environment. Data collected will be given to the government, Development Bureau and other stakeholders as references for future development process. Fanling Luen Wo Hui, Sheung Shui Shek Wu Hui and Tai Po Market are three local historical markets. Just like the other old districts in Hong Kong, they are facing many urban problems, such as an over-cramping space for both pedestrians and transport, conflicts of land use caused by conservation and development, and many more. These are the important urban issues worth our attention. In what ways could we revitalize these three old markets, in order to improve the living environment without hindering socioeconomic development? The objectives of this project are to scrutinize the current situation and the prospect of the old markets in various perspectives. The research team proposes three possible plans, hoping to upgrade the living conditions of the neighbourhood, rejuvenate the markets, and strive for a betterment of society.
